FOXBORO — Trash talking New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady doesn’t sound like a good idea, but Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones had a reason for getting into it with the six-time Super Bowl champion Sunday.

Jones and Brady came helmet-to-helmet with 2:59 left in the first half and Kansas City leading 17-7. The Chiefs defense had just forced an incompletion from Brady to bring up fourth down, and Jones tried his best to frustrate the 42-year-old quarterback as much as possible.

“Just crap-talking,” Jones said of his exchange with Brady. “Tom is a heck of a quarterback, a Hall of Famer. Any time you’re able to talk crap, you gotta affect him any type of way. I got much respect for Tom Brady, man. He’s definitely a GOAT in my eyes, one of the greatest. Any time you’re able to affect his game any type of way, whether it’s talking, whether it’s hitting him, whether it’s getting him uncomfortable, you got to.”

Does Jones think all of that had any effect?

“I mean, you see the score.”

The Chiefs won 23-16 to secure the AFC West title and take another step closer toward earning a top-two seed in the AFC playoff race.

Updated NFL playoff picture after Week 14>>>

It’s hard to imagine any kind of trash talk having a negative impact on Brady’s performance. He’s one of the most mentally tough players in league history. What we do know is this Chiefs defense is much better-equipped to slow down the Patriots’ offense than last season’s unit.

The Chiefs, from a physicality standpoint, made an effort to stand up to the Patriots, and that was quite apparent when Kansas City wide receiver Sammy Watkins got tangled up with New England cornerback Stephon Gilmore on the visitors’ sideline in the second half.

“You got two good players going up against each other in heated moments,” Watkins said. “I know him from (the Buffalo Bills), so I was like, this is my opportunity to take a shot, and I did, and he took his shots also.”

The chippiness made for a playoff-like scene in Foxboro, and you can bet all of the trash talk and physical play won’t be forgotten if these teams meet again in January.

“First play of the game I knew it was more of a playoff atmosphere, a playoff game,” Watkins said. “It definitely was probably one of the hardest battles since last year, and that’s what we look forward to. It’s going to be the same way in the next six or seven weeks, so we just gotta continue to come out and play with each other and play hard, strong, and keep fighting.”

The Dallas Cowboys had to play without Jeff Heath on Sunday against the Detroit Lions and that meant Darian Thompson got the start in his place. Unfortunately, Thompson didn’t rise to the occasion and struggled in coverage against the Lions. If Jeff Heath isn’t available when the Dallas Cowboys travel to New England this week, the Cowboys will have to make a decision. Do they continue to roll with Thompson despite a poor showing, or give preseason standout Donovan Wilson a shot?

Last week, Kris Richard stated that Thompson was a player that the defensive staff trusted to fill in for Heath at strong safety and it’s possible they still feel that way moving forward. Thompson is a veteran player and has the ability to be disruptive in the run game. Against the Lions assortment of pass catchers, however, Thompson had a difficult time. Pro Football Focus gave Thompson the lowest coverage grade of any player on the defense in week 11 and there were times it was evident he was the weakest link in the secondary.

Since the 2019 NFL Draft, Cowboys fans and analysts have been intrigued by the prospects of Donovan Wilson starting at safety alongside Xavier Woods. Wilson had shown a penchant for making plays on the football while at Texas A&M. The excitement about Wilson in the secondary was only furthered when he had three interceptions in four preseason games.

Though the Cowboys defensive coaches may consider Wilson more of a free safety type, he and Woods both provide a lot of versatility that could allow Kris Richard to mix and match them in coverages to keep the offense guessing. With Woods and Wilson, it wouldn’t be so simple to diagnose who is the box safety and who is the deep middle until after the snap.

The Dallas Cowboys’ defense has been inconsistent in creating turnovers this season and Donovan Wilson could help that. With Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on the horizon, I find it unlikely that the Cowboys coaching staff would go to a rookie, but if Darian Thompson struggles in week 12 as he did against the Detroit Lions, Richard needs to be willing to make a change in the secondary.

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have much margin for error over the remainder of the schedule with a tight NFC East race with the Philadelphia Eagles. Sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind, even if that means putting young, unproven players on the field. The Cowboys coaching staff can’t keep Donovan Wilson’s playmaking intangibles on the sideline much longer. To make a deep run in the playoffs, defenses have to be able to create turnovers and Donovan Wilson is just one of those guys that can create turnovers. This week might be the time to unleash that ability.

DETROIT — Darian Thompson wore a loss on his face.

He quietly stood at his locker Sunday, among the last defensive backs to dress. He spoke softly, the disappointment dripping from his words, as music blasted nearby from a sound system that defensive lineman Michael Bennett operated.

This was a winning locker room.

Deejay aside, in the defense’s area, it didn’t sound like one.

“First off, I’ll start with me,” Thompson said. “I’ve got to be better. I gave up too many plays today, me personally. As a unit, we’ve just got to continue to fight, continue to scratch and claw. Be consistent with our execution.”

For stretches Sunday, Dallas performed as it should against a Detroit Lions offense without its franchise quarterback. It pressured. It forced three-and-outs. It controlled. But two early touchdowns on short fields and too many explosive plays in the second half kept a 35-27 win far closer than it should have been.

At Ford Field, this performance was enough.

At Gillette Stadium next Sunday against the New England Patriots, it almost certainly wouldn’t be.

“Not good enough,” cornerback Chidobe Awuzie said. “We allowed too many touchdowns to a team like that with a quarterback [Matthew Stafford] injured. We lost last week. Usually, we respond well. I don’t think we responded well enough today.

“It wasn’t good enough tackling. We let them kind of run on us. They completed a couple passes for touchdowns. … I don’t think it was good enough today as a whole defense.”

There were a share of lowlights.

Thompson, Awuzie and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch each missed a tackle on a 22-yard catch by Lions running back J.D. McKissic in the second quarter. That was one of a season-high seven plays exceeding 20 yards the Cowboys allowed. Five of those seven occurred in the second half.

By comparison, the Cowboys entered Sunday having allowed five 20-yard plays in a game just once in 2019. That came during their miserable Oct. 13 loss to the New York Jets.

Thompson and safety Xavier Woods were the nearest defenders in zone coverage on the Lions’ longest gain, a 39-yard strike from Jeff Driskel to Marvin Hall. The second-longest play was a 34-yard jump ball that Driskel chucked for wide receiver Kenny Golladay. A leaping Thompson was unable to break up the pass late in the fourth quarter of a one-score game.

But the defense immediately responded.

The Cowboys look like they will have starting safety Jeff Heath and backup running back Tony Pollard on Sunday against the Rams.

Both were full participants in Thursday’s practice after being limited Wednesday.

Heath missed last week’s loss to the Bears with injuries to both shoulders. Pollard sat out the game after injuring his ankle in practice two days before the game.

Those were the only changes to the team’s injury report.

Linebacker Sean Lee remained out with pectoral and thigh injuries. He has started the past three games at weakside linebacker in place of Leighton Vander Esch, who remains out with a neck injury.

The Cowboys signed cornerback Deante Burton off Indianapolis’ practice squad, Jason Garrett said Wednesday.

Burton takes the roster spot left vacant when the Cowboys placed cornerback Anthony Brown on injured reserve.

Burton, 25, played one game for Atlanta and two for Houston last season in his only career action. He made five tackles and forced a fumble.

He began his career as a receiver, signing with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State in 2017. The Falcons moved him to corner.

Burton briefly spent time on the Packers’ roster last season.

The Cowboys added offensive lineman Marcus Henry to the practice squad. He worked out for the team Tuesday.

Henry spent time with the Texans this season.

Justin March Jersey

FRISCO — The bug has gotten around.

Linebacker Justin March is dealing with a respiratory illness. Linebacker Joe Thomas, a reserve who could start this weekend, missed the entire practice week to the flu. Safety Donovan Wilson missed the final two days. And linebackers coach Ben Bloom also has the flu, multiple players said, hence why he hasn’t coached a practice this week.

The Cowboys knew preparing for the New England Patriots would involve containing the catch.

This isn’t what they had in mind.

The defense absorbed a blow Thursday when it learned that continued neck discomfort for linebacker Leighton Vander Esch required prolonged rest. He won’t play Sunday and likely will be sidelined into December with a disk issue, sources said. The team considers him week-to-week.

That setback, combined with an illness spell that prompted the Cowboys to give quarterback Dak Prescott preventative care this week, only complicates the effort to thwart a Patriots passing game that leans on its backfield.

New England averages an NFL-high 11.4 pass attempts per game to running backs. Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles were effective when defending 14 passes from quarterback Tom Brady to the position group.

The Patriots (9-1) managed only eight catches for 61 yards.

Without Vander Esch, a Dallas defense that missed 24 tackles the last two games looks to bounce back and achieve similar success.

“The screen game, it’s obviously [about] recognition,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “It’s the whole entire group hustling to the football, understanding your fits in the screen, being able to recognize them, being able to hustle. A lot of times it takes three or four guys. A lot of times it takes a guy from the back side hustling. It’s a group effort on screens. It’s communication. We know they’re great at that.”

Lee is a key piece to the Vander Esch contingency plan.

Like when the 2018 first-round pick was sidelined with neck stiffness on Nov. 4 against the New York Giants, Lee worked at weak-side, or “Will,” linebacker during Friday’s practice, switching from his usual strong-side (“Sam”) spot. Luke Gifford, an undrafted rookie who has yet to play a defensive snap in 2019, worked at Sam backer on Friday with Thomas recovering.

The expectation is that Thomas, despite not practicing at all this week and missing most meetings, will play Sam on Sunday in the base defense. Lee not only will replace Vander Esch at Will but also in the nickel defense beside linebacker Jaylon Smith.

“Sean has been Sean for his whole career,” cornerback Chidobe Awuzie said Friday. “He’s made a name for himself before anyone else on this defense has. For that reason, he’s well respected. He’s on it. He studies. He anticipates things, and he reacts really well. The expectation for Sean stepping in for Leighton is nothing less than what Leighton would do. Even more sometimes.

“We’re happy for him to be in his natural habitat. We’re praying for Leighton and hoping he gets better. We’re praying for Joe and hoping he gets better. But this defense, we’ve got a standard. And whoever is in, we’ve got to step up.”

The Patriots generally rotate four running backs.

Of them, James White is the most dynamic as a receiver, and his usage reflects that. In 84% of his 281 offensive snaps, the team has operated a pass play. Understanding what an offense likes to do with certain personnel in what groupings and which game situations is among the first steps to containment.

The Patriots have passed on 73.1% of Rex Burkhead’s snaps. By comparison, with Sony Michel on the field, 63.5% have been runs. For added context, New England has attempted to pass on about 60% of plays this season overall.

Identifying which back is on the field is just one part to defending how the Patriots involve their running backs in the pass game.

“You’ve got to be alert for pick situations,” Vander Esch said Wednesday, one day before an MRI determined he won’t play Sunday. “You’ve got to know down and distance; that tells a lot. You’ve got to know their alignment. If you can just stay ahead of the snap, that pretty much does your job for you.”

The Cowboys didn’t quite see this practice week coming. No one did.

Defending the catch started early.

ARLINGTON — It’s inspiring to see a player in his golden years set aside his glass of Metamucil to sip from the fountain of youth.

When two aging veterans and friends who have been together for the better part of a decade do it in the same game, well, that’s a moment to cherish.

Jason Witten and Sean Lee did just that in the waning seconds of a Cowboys victory that was as unexpected as it was dominant. Early Sunday evening, as the finishing touches were being put on a 44-21 victory over the LA Rams, the two spoke about what had taken place.

Witten made a beautiful, one-handed catch and spin for a 19-yard touchdown to stake the Cowboys to an early lead. Lee’s interception and impressive return late in the half meant the Dallas offense only needed to gain 9 yards to score a touchdown on its fourth consecutive possession.

The Rams never got closer than 21 points the rest of the day.

“For us old guys to have a couple of plays that can help the team win, it’s special,’’ Witten said. “We know where we are in our careers. We’ve always prided ourselves in the film work and preparation.

“Games like this is why you do all that work, to have a few moments where you can turn back that clock.’’

There’s a lot of clock to turn back.

Let’s start with 70. That’s the combined age of Witten and Lee. The two have accumulated 26 years of NFL experience. In case you’re wondering, that’s two more years than Ezekiel Elliott has on his birth certificate.

Elliott ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 43 yards through the air as the Cowboys broke a three-game losing streak to set up next week’s showdown with Philadelphia for the NFC East title. But it was Witten who began the scoring parade for Dallas with a 19-yard reception, his longest scoring catch since December 2017 against the New York Giants.

“You know, it was awesome to see him make that play,’’ Lee said. “It fired me up.

“I couldn’t let him one up me.’’

He didn’t.

Lee’s interception in the final two minutes of the first half — fittingly, his first since December 2017 against the Giants — allowed the Cowboys to build an insurmountable lead. His 25-yard return down to the Rams’ 9-yard line featured a spin move he doesn’t even remember making.

Why didn’t he go ahead and score?

“I’m not that fast,’’ Lee replied.

The offensive starters ran onto the field to congratulate Lee before he could get back to the sidelines. They were as effusive and animated as he was with his teammates in their circle before the game kicked off.

“Not to get sentimental, but seeing the guys run on the field after I had that pick is something very special to me,’’ said Lee, who added a sack later in the game, the first credited solely to him since December 2015 against Washington. “That’s something I’ll remember for a long time.’’

Witten came out of retirement to return to the team and sport he loves this season.

Lee took a substantial pay cut and reduced role to be part of the Cowboys this season because, in his words, “I love this organization.’’ His high school coach, Jim Render, and 25 or so friends all the way back from elementary school, were at this game and celebrated with him afterward. He required a cortisone shot Friday afternoon for the injury to his quad and pelvis to play.

“I know how much he’s gone through to get back to this point,’’ Witten said.

That’s what the two men spoke about on the sidelines in the closing seconds.

“We’ve had a lot of good times together,’’ Witten said. “We’ve had unfortunately a lot of adversity together. As leaders and captains for a lot of those years, we feel like we carried that torch.

“When you come back, you always want to think about these good moments and these good plays. To be honest, it hasn’t always been that way this year.’’

It hasn’t. But the magnitude and thoroughness of Sunday’s win gives the Cowboys hope they can finish strong.

A couple of players in the sunset of their careers helped lead the way.

“Those guys represent everything you want in your organization, everything you want in terms of preparation and love for the game, their willingness to put the team first and then their performance,’’ head coach Jason Garrett said.

“I think that was reflective in our performance today.’’

On the spectrum of baseball rarities, a signature from Shoeless Joe Jackson — the turn-of-the-century star who never learned to read or write — is high on the list.

Jackson never spent a day in school, instead joining his father doing odd jobs at the Brandon Mill in his hometown of Greenville, S.C., as a child and taking the baseball path to stardom from the time he was barely a teenager.

Jackson, who hit .408 for Cleveland in 1911 and was banned by baseball for his role — a highly disputed role — in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, did sign a few important documents along the way, though. One of those rare signatures is up for auction right now, with the bidding at Leland’s ending on Friday. It’s a signed mortgage voucher from 1916. At the time of this story’s publishing, the high bid is $20,886.

MORE: Dear MLB teams: Please keep paying the players

Here’s a portion of the official item description.

“This rarity is a Joe Jackson signed voucher of a mortgage payment made by the White Sox. It is dated February 28th, 1916 in Savannah, Ga and paid to the order of the Savannah Realty Investment Corporation and value received and charge the same to the account of Harry Grabiner, Secy. Chicago White Sox. This is a scarce piece of baseball history. It is in very good to excellent condition with two minor vertical folds and a tiny chip on the right edge. It has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA.”

I visited Greenville a few months ago to see how Shoeless Joe’s hometown views its most famous son — spoiler: The town still loves Joe! — and when I was there, I talked to Michael Wallach, the managing director of the Shoeless Joe Museum, about Jackson signatures, among many, many other topics. The museum owns Jackson’s will and has a blown-up picture of the will on display (the original is safely tucked away in a different location).

“We know of only six legitimate, proven signatures. I personally believe there are a lot more,” Wallach told me. “The reason I think there are many more is because I can imagine times when somebody might have said, ‘Joe, give me the best you can.’ ”

Mostly, though, he took another approach.

“Because he couldn’t sign his name, he would sign his name like many people who couldn’t write back in those days, with an X,” Wallach said. “And then the person next to them would say, ‘I witness that X as being Joe’s legitimate signature.’ ”

I reached out to Wallach to ask about the Leland’s item.

The document, he said, is believed to be the real thing. The challenge with authenticating Jackson signatures, Wallach explained to me on my visit, is that because Jackson couldn’t write, he was basically trying to draw his name without any sort of writing muscle memory, which meant each time he wrote his name a different variation was produced.

Jackson signed his will in 1950, and he died the next year.

“For the will, he wanted to sign his real name,” Wallach said. “He was practicing with his wife, Katie. They got to the lawyer’s office like 20 minutes ahead of their scheduled time, and the lawyer gave them a large envelope, an 8 1/2 by 11 big envelope, for him to sign his name, and for 20 minutes they practiced his name. And then they threw the envelope out. Can you imagine what that envelope would be worth? I don’t think there’s anything in sports that would come close to the value of that envelope.”

You won’t find the “Shoeless” part on any of his signatures, though. Jackson hated that nickname, which originated from one game in Anderson, S.C., in 1908, when Jackson ditched a new pair of shoes that were hurting his feet.

The document up for auction, though, probably isn’t the only time Jackson signed some sort of mortgage document. Joe and Katie Jackson were active participants in the Greenville real-estate market.

“Katie, I think, was the original flip-this-house person,” Wallach said. “They bought probably 20 different homes in the Greenville area that they lived in over the years. Sometimes they lived there for less than a year. I don’t know if she was really flipping them, or because he was on the road all the time, or whatever. But he’d buy homes for his parents, for her families, and sell them. I think she’s the original flip-it person.”
