Before Jourdan Lewis was a standout cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys, Michigan Wolverines or the Detroit Cass Tech Technicians, he was a youth football player within the Detroit Police Athletic League like thousands of children are each year.

Simply called Detroit PAL, the organization offers 11 different sports for children of various ages from all corners of Detroit. Lewis got his start in the sport of football with PAL’s Westside Cubs team and he intends to show his appreciation in Dallas’ Thursday night football game at Chicago.

As part of the NFL’s #MyCauseMyCleats campaign, Lewis will wear custom cleats in tribute to Detroit PAL. In a tweet from the Dallas Cowboys account, Lewis chose to represent PAL on his cleats because the organization “helped shape him growing up.”

According to the NFL’s website, “[p]layers will have the opportunity to raise money for their cause by auctioning their cleats off at NFL Auction; 100 percent of money raised will be donated to the player’s charities. Fans may bid on game-issued player cleats to help players raise funds for their chosen causes.”

Lewis’ teammate on Dallas, running back Mike Weber, is also a Cass Tech alum who went on to play for Ohio State. He will be wearing cleats in support of the Autism Speaks campaign.

The Buffalo Bills on April 25 selected former Cougars defensive tackle Ed Oliver with the No. 9 selection, marking the end of two years of no first-round picks for UH.

Houston may not have to wait much longer to produce another premier NFL talent.

Senior left tackle Josh Jones’ collegiate career is over. Now, it’s time for him to spend months preparing for 2020’s iteration of the NFL Draft, held in Las Vegas. His chances of making it in the first are good.

Jones measures in as a fringe first-round pick and likely second-rounder, according to NFL Draft experts NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein and CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso. Both see him elevating his stock if he has a good Senior Bowl performance in late January.

“He has the size, length, starting experience, production and athleticism of most prospects at his position who ultimately go in one of those first two rounds,” Trapasso said in a Twitter message.

At 6 feet 7 inches and 310 pounds, he has foundational NFL size at an important position.

“He needs to add more strength to his frame, but he’s got long arms, he’s a good athlete and he has really shown a great deal of improvement with his technique in pass protection as the season has progressed,” Zierlein said in a Twitter message. “He’s better in pass protection than he is a run blocker right now, but that’s okay because that’s what gets you drafted earliest – taking care of the quarterback.”

Both Zierlein and Trapasso agree that Jones is a stout pass protector. That correlates with their comparisons, as Zierlein sees him similar to Chicago Bears starter Bobby Massie while Trapasso has him as a fusion between All-Pro Tyron Smith and Pro Bowler Mitchell Schwartz.

The draft season has yet to ramp up. While the Cougars won’t be playing football until 2020, the NFL is, and so are bowling teams. However, Jones is getting attention, as he’s earned his fair share of spots as a first-rounder in mock drafts.

The hype for Jones is there. While not a definite first-round pick in all eyes, he plays an increasingly valuable position and is strongest in its most prominent trait – pass protecting. If he has good performances at the Senior Bowl, NFL Combine and UH pro-day, Cougar nation may be looking at back-to-back first-round picks for the first time since 1972.

Jaylon Smith had some moments worth celebrating on Thursday.

He broke up two passes in the end zone on consecutive plays during the second quarter. Later, he broke up a third pass, becoming just the second Cowboys linebacker in a decade to record three passes defensed in a single game. He recovered a fumble, too.

And celebrate, Smith did.

It wasn’t always a good look.

Smith was approached Thursday evening when exiting the locker room about what transpired following his second end-zone breakup during a 31-24 loss to the Bears. He looked in the general direction of wide receiver Javon Wims, the intended target on the play. Wims was down on the field grabbing his right knee in visible pain. Smith proceeded to salute the crowd and perform a rehearsed handshake with a teammate.

“I’m not that type of player,” Smith said. “I didn’t know my guy was hurt. I know how it feels, and I’m praying for him. Absolutely. … I ain’t that type of guy.”

Smith, who suffered a significant knee injury late in his college career, then posted a social-media message to that same effect.

“To clear the air, I was unaware my opponent was down with an injury following a play in tonight’s game!” Smith wrote on Twitter. “I understand how it feels to be down with an injury and would never wish that upon anyone. I celebrated after making a big play. Sending a speedy recovery his way.”

Wims has a slight knee sprain, according to NFL Media. He’s not expected to miss significant time.

Overall, it was a mixed evening for Smith. After Wims exited the game, Smith allowed a touchdown on the ensuing play to wide receiver Allen Robinson. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith had one of the Cowboys’ 10 missed tackles for the game.

“Jaylon was certainly active in the game,” coach Jason Garrett said Friday. “He was around the ball a lot. He did some good things, both as a run defender and as a pass defender. But he was part of the whole defensive effort, and I don’t know if you can look across the board and say anybody really stood out positively on defense when (the Bears moved) the ball as consistently as they did. There were some bright spots. There were some bright plays for different people and for Jaylon, but overall, the defensive effort wasn’t good enough.”

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods was arrested last week in Frisco, Texas. He was initially pulled over for speeding — police say he was going 77 miles per hour in a 60 MPH zone — but when officers smelled marijuana in the car, it changed the situation.
‘You’ve got too much marijuana’

Recreational marijuana use is still illegal in Texas. Via TMZ, which viewed the police video of the December 3 stop, cops noted several times that Woods had a lot of weed.

Police found two mason jars and a small gold cylinder container, all of them full of weed, in Woods’ SUV, and also several pieces of drug paraphernalia. Police said Woods stuffed a marijuana cigarette into a half-full water bottle during the stop.

In the video an officer tells the 26-year-old, “So listen: you’ve got too much marijuana, OK?”

As the officer is putting Woods into handcuffs, Woods tries to talk him out of it, saying, “Come on bro, are you serious?”

But the amount of weed was apparently too much to overlook.

“I have no option. You’ve got a lot of marijuana. I can’t do anything about that,” the officer says.

Woods was booked for misdemeanor marijuana possession and a third-degree felony for evidence tampering because he stuffed the joint into the water bottle.

Undrafted out of USC in 2016, Woods has played about half of the Cowboys’ defensive snaps this season, with 15 total tackles, a quarterback hit and a fumble recovery in eight games. He has missed Dallas’ last two games to an MCL sprain, and he likely has punishment coming from the league as well.

RQC is a leading compliance consulting and advisory firm founded in 2007, with offices in London and New York. It has extensive experience of FCA, SEC and CFTC compliance. CFM is part of the Capricorn Capital Group (Capricorn), an international family office with offices in London, Johannesburg and Hong Kong. Capricorn has a long and successful history in backing high-quality teams in a range of alternative investments.

CFM and RQC already have a partnership through their joint venture, Capricorn Regulatory Hosting, a platform bringing together the alternative investment management experience of CFM and the compliance consulting expertise of RQC, a unique combination in the space.

The new investment, which is subject to FCA approval, will allow RQC to use CFM’s skill base and experience to support the growth of RQC’s US compliance consulting offering, the regulatory hosting platform and finally, the development of a wider online training offering.

CFM’s co-owners Darryl Noik, Chief Operating Officer, and Jonty Campion, Business Development Director, says: “There has been a long-standing relationship between RQC and CFM. As a client firm, RQC helped CFM to institutionalise our business by providing us with the right tools we needed to succeed. When we were approached by Robert to form a more formal partnership, where we could also offer our expertise to help him expand the rest of his business, it seemed like a natural evolution to our existing working relationship. We share the same values and principles as Robert and his team, when it comes to operating a business and we enjoy working with likeminded people.”

Robert Quinn (pictured), founder of RQC, says: “I have a long-term working relationship with CFM and respect their principles, culture and values. Most importantly they understand first-hand, the importance of ensuring our core product and way of doing business is not compromised as we move forward together. With our recent joint venture, our interests became more aligned and I feel that this new step is more a natural evolution of our relationship than a change. I will remain as CEO of RQC and we will be working collaboratively to grow the business. I very much look forward to our future working relationship together.“

The Dallas Cowboys added quite a few pieces to their defensive front during the offseason. Veteran’s Kerry Hyder and Christian Covington were brought in to provide a steady rotation on the defensive line and to make life easier for All-Pro DeMarcus Lawrence.

The biggest acquisition came at the end of March when the Cowboys traded for Defensive End Robert Quinn, sending a sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins. A former All-Pro in his own right, Quinn was set to start opposite Lawrence at right defensive end and provide the Cowboys with one of the best pass-rushing duos in the league. Unfortunately, Quinn was suspended in August for violating the NFL’s PED policy. Also, he broke a bone in his hand around the same time, making his start in Dallas a shaky one.

When Quinn made his Cowboys debut in Week 3 vs his former team he wasted very little time making his presence felt. Not only did he register a sack but he was credited with seven quarterback pressures, which already gave him the team lead in that category. Pretty impressive for a guy with limited practice time prior to the season.

This would set the tone for his entire season and he hasn’t looked back. In the seven games since his Cowboys debut, Quinn has registered at least a half-sack in every game except Week 5 vs the Green Bay Packers, including two games with multiple sacks. What’s mind-blowing to me is that his 8.5 sacks for the season are almost a third of the Cowboys 26 sacks as a team.

Quinn’s speed and leverage coming off the edge is quite impressive. Trying to block him one on one is a recipe for disaster. In fact, if any team takes this approach they might as well make funeral arrangements for their quarterback.

The benefits of having Quinn are endless. The more pressure he gets coming off the right side the easier it will make Lawrence’s job coming off the left side due to less double teams. What this also does is free up Maliek Collins, Antwaun Woods, and Michael Bennett on the interior by putting them in more one on one situations.

The “Black Cobra” as he’s called in Dallas has been the best offseason acquisition the Cowboys have made in a while. He’s on pace for 15 sacks in 14 games which would be the second-most of his career (had 19 in 2013) and his first double-digit sack season since 2014 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Rams. He’s been best pass rusher all year for the Cowboys and a true gift from above for this defensive line unit.

Xavier Su’a-Filo Jersey

FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys’ official position regarding the offensive line is that when second-year man Connor Williams is healthy, he will regain the starting left guard spot from Xavier Su’a-Filo. As we scan Thursday’s Practice/Injury Report for Sunday’s game at New England, the key phrase might be “when healthy.”

“I feel 100-percent,” said Williams on Wednesday as he returned to practice after missing Sunday’s win over Detroit – and having just had arthroscopic knee surgery following the club’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 10. “My goal was getting back this week.”

The Cowboys have the No. 1 offense in football and a record of success when Su’a-Filo plays. The Patriots have the No. 1 defense in the NFL. But Dallas is a 6.5-point underdog against a New England team that rarely loses at home. So for the 6-4 Cowboys, in trying to close the gap, every decision, every move, is of heightened importance.

That includes who starts at left guard. Is Williams healthy? Would another week benefit him? Is he a better player than Su’a-Filo? Is one O-lineman or another better suited to handle New England?

Williams has spent time lining up with the first team, and as you can see by the Practice/Injury Report, he’s “limited” – actually a sign of progress.

Dallas needs the right decision here and needs injury breaks, too. Hopefully they’ll get that in the form of another O-line starter, right tackle La’el Collins (knee), who has not practiced. Dallas hopes to have him Sunday, but if not, Cam Fleming – a former Patriot – would be the right tackle.

Also clearing health hurdles for Dallas are Amari Cooper, DeMarcus Lawrence and Jeff Heath (shoulder). Linbacker Joe Thomas (illness) missed a second straight day.
